First, there were Data Engineers – experts in the collection, transformation, and processing of big data. This cohort of professionals were primarily made up of developers in back-end systems, be it customer facing products or developing data models for the business analysts to consume.
Then came Data Scientists – a hybrid data engineer and statistician with a specialty in algorithmic/mathematical concepts. Their primary focus is to extract insights or automate tasks based on clearly identified data elements to solve specific business problems.
Now comes the rise of Decision Science – a specialty among data scientists, call them decision scientists, in which they focus on enabling business leaders (mostly Directors and VPs) with data-driven decision making. They transform an organization’s decision making capabilities and processes through the implementation of an end to end analytics solution while incorporating advance predictive and statistical methods.
